Joaquín Torres-Sospedra

Computer Scientist

J. Torres-Sospedra (Castellón, Spain, 1979) holds a B.S. in Computer Science Engineering (2003) and a Ph.D. in Intelligent Computer Systems (2011) from Universitat Jaume I. He is currently a Distinguished Researcher in the Department of Computer Science at the Universitat de València in a position funded by Generalitat Valenciana, Spain (CIDEXG/2023/17, Conselleria d’Educació, Universitats i Ocupació). His research interest include Machine Learning, Indoor Positioning and Navigation and Open Science. He is Senior Editor of Expert Systems with Applications and the IEEE Journal of Indoor and Seamless Positioning and Navigation.

About Me

Joaquin Torres-Sospedra is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Valencia under the GEN-T (CIDEGENT) program. He joined Valencia after two years at the Universidade do Minho (Guimarães, Portugal) under the Individual Fellowship program of the H2020 Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions (H2020-MSCA-IF). His research interests focus on: machine learning, pattern recognition, indoor positioning & navigation, robotics, and interoperability. He completed his doctoral thesis in the Neural Networks and Soft Computing group (2003-2010) with a training grant funded by the Universitat Jaume I. His work focused on the development of classification systems based on "ensembles" and their efficient combination. In 2010-2012 he worked in other research groups applying his knowledge in other contexts and projects: Robotic Intelligence Lab (2010-2011) and Knowledge Engineering Group (2012). In May 2013, he joined the Geospatial Technologies Research Group of the Universitat Jaume I, where he led R&D projects related to indoor positioning systems (2013-2019). From January 2020 to August 2021, he was technical director and sole administrator at the company "UBIK Geospatial Solutions S.L.", leading the line of research in indoor positioning and navigation and managing all its projects. In the 2020 call, the project proposed by Joaquín, ORIENTATE, obtained the maximum score (100 points) in the prestigious H2020-MSCA-IF call. In recent months, he has participated in project proposals for the Portuguese FCT (IC&DT), the Spanish MICINN, and Horizon Europe (HORIZON-RIA & Doctoral Networks). Currently, he is the PI of three projects: POSITIONATE (GEN-T, Generalitat Valenciana), ROBOSAT (PCI2025-1, AEI), and CHASER (CHISTERA, ERA-NETWORKS).

He collaborates with various national research groups working on positioning, localization and navigation -Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), University of Alcalá and University of Extremadura- and international -University of Minho (Portugal), Centro de Computaçao Gráfica (Portugal), Tampere University (Finland), Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italy), University of Antwerpen (Belgium), University of Jyväskylä (Finland), Universite Gustav Eiffel (France), ETHZ (Switzerland), AALTO University (Finland), INRIA (France), among others. Some of these collaborations have been formalized by the Spanish networks of excellence REPNIN and REPNIN+, by the Erasmus+ program, and by the European networks GEO-C and A-WEAR (H2020-MSCA-EJD). It should be noted that the collaboration not only includes research groups, but also R&D&I centers with the aim of transferring and commercializing technological developments. He has been a co-author of 78 publications in journals (41 Q1, 16 Q2), 144 publications in conferences, and 3 book chapters, many of them the result of collaboration with other research groups. He has co-edited the book 'Using Geographical and Fingerprinting Data to create Systems for Indoor Positioning and Indoor/Outdoor Navigation: Challenges, Experiences and Technology Roadmap' for Elsevier. Since 2013, the impact of his publications has grown significantly, with ~6700 citations (h-index:38; I10:103) in Google Scholar, being one of the leading European authors in "Indoor Localization" according to Scopus.

He has served as a program committee and/or reviewer for various conferences such as "International Conference on Intelligent Computing", "International Conference on Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN)", "International Joint Conference on Neural Networks" or "International Conference on Localization and GNSS (ICL-GNSS)" where he has been a member of the Steering Committee since 2020. He is the co-organizer of the annual international competition developed at the IPIN congress since 2015. He has been a co-organizer of the IPIN conferences in Lloret de Mar (2021), Nuremberg (2023), and Tampere (2025); and ICL-GNSS 2020-21-22 in Tampere and ICL-GNSS 2023 in Castellón. He has been part of 13 doctoral thesis juries (2 of them as president) and has successfully supervised 14 undergraduate students, 44 Master's students, and 7 Doctoral students. He is currently co-supervising 4 undergraduate, 7 master's, and 6 PhD students.

Finally, Joaquín has co-edited several Special Issues, reviewed 500+ magazine articles (see profile on Publons), and handled over 5000 journal manuscripts as editor. Currently, he is Senior Editor in the prestigious "Expert Systems with Applications" (Elsevier) and in "IEEE Journal on Indoor and Seamless Positioning and Navigation".

The primary aim of MAPV is to enhance the quality of life of visually impaired people (VIP) by enabling independent, accurate, and safe mobility in complex environments, while preserving user privacy. To achieve this, MAPV explores a collaborative, AI-driven, sound-based positioning approach that:
  • Does not rely on intrusive infrastructure
  • Avoids vision-based sensing
  • Integrates acoustic data from multiple mobile devices and nearby users
  • Enhances spatial orientation and landmark identification through AI-based environmental sound recognition
Special attention is given to minimizing sound invasiveness for visually impaired users and guide dogs, while ensuring high positioning accuracy, strong privacy protection, and reliable collaboration between mobile devices.

ROBOSAT - Autonomous robot navigation in the wild using satellite-based 3D geographical information

Massive collection of multidimensional satellite-based 3D geographic information systems (GIS) is now a reality. Yet the correlation of such data with local information, especially in unconstrained environments such as in the wild, is a poorly addressed challenge so far. Our project aims to provide a scalable MultiGIS high-quality data collection platform through the use of a quadrupedal robot that can autonomously perform long-distance missions in challenging environments (e.g., Swiss Alps and Finnish forests). By mounting a multi-modal sensor setup that includes cameras, LiDARs, IMUs, GNSS, and an I/Q raw data grabber on the robot, we enable the consistent and repeatable collection of local data that can be combined with GIS. Our project will also develop general-purpose and automatic tools for multi-sensor data storage, data management, data consolidation, and data labelling based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and will look into solutions for efficient data use and dissemination. We will show the benefits of this MultiGIS database and of our robotic platform by using them to develop and improve the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) localization algorithms. There is a two-fold benefit, as the integration of GIS data into GNSS will enable us to detect and attenuate the effect of various interferences (e.g., multipath, jamming, spoofing), and, at the same time, the improvement of GNSS-based solutions will provide us with better location estimates to more accurately label and fuse GIS data. This project will lay the foundations for ubiquitous robots in the wild with improved GNSS localization services as well as for a MultiGIS database for unstructured environments that is to be an order of magnitude larger than any of the currently existing ones.

POSITIONATE - Pervasive Indoor Positioning in Smart Factories

Indoor positioning (IP) will play a central role in industry 4.0 by assisting unmanned vehicle navigation or tracking goods within the value chain. POSITIONATE will progress the knowledge regarding the capabilities and limitations of IP, with a particular interest in industrial environments. The project plans to gather relevant information from prototype development to technology transfer for its exploitation. The final goal is to advance state of the art, developing a new IP solution that balances technical (accuracy) and resources (scalability) restrictions and a novel sensor fusion method to dynamically combine different IP technologies improving their individual coverage. Also, we want to be a neutral institution leading to IP evaluation.

CHASER - Channel Charting as a Service

Channel charting (CC) is an emerging application of self-supervised machine learning (ML) to wireless communication which leverages the fact that wireless communications systems continuously collect data about the electromagnetic propagation channel. This data, known as channel state information (CSI), is high-dimensional and acquired at fast rates but typically discarded immediately after use. In contrast, CC recycles acquired CSI data by means of dimensionality reduction (DR) to learn a so-called channel chart. This channel chart is essentially a low-dimensional representation of the CSI with the salient property that users who are close in the channel chart are also close in physical space. Put simply: CC is a method that produces a pseudo-location with no recourse to classical positioning methods, potentially opening up a range of location-based applications to operate with significantly reduced overhead. Real-world experiments in single base-station scenarios have demonstrated the practical viability of CC. Despite these encouraging preliminary results, it is unclear whether CC can generate pseudo-location information at the radio access network (RAN) scale (e.g., for multiple base stations) with sufficient quality to replace true location information for certain location-based services and applications. The objective of this project is to develop methods and algorithms allowing to implement network-wide CC, develop its predictive capabilities when applied to real-world use cases with heterogeneous users and dynamically changing environments in which CSI may be affected by changes in the electromagnetic propagation environment. With the ultimate goals of developing CC into a robust and versatile pseudo-positioning method and of enhancing the expressivity of the channel chart beyond merely replacing location information to serve as a general basis for context-based services, we envision channel charting as a service (CaaS), which assists a number of network functions and user-level applications with a CC-based pseudo-location management architecture accessible through a dedicated application programming interface. To achieve these goals, we will perform fundamental research on the algorithm and implementation levels, validate our solutions by gathering long-term CSI measurements in dynamically changing environments, and optimize CaaS for radio resource management (RRM) in RAN. The project will lift CC from technology readiness level (TRL) 3 to TRL 4.

Indoor positioning (IP) will play a central role in industry 4.0 by assisting unmanned vehicle navigation or tracking goods within the value chain. However, some disadvantages prevent the usage of technologies with the technical requirements for IP in industrial environments. Also, the variations in scenarios used in empirical assessment exclude the direct comparison of existing IP technologies. The EU-funded ORIENTATE project will address this issue with a new scalable high-accuracy solution. It will integrate multiple IP technologies to create an open assessment structure. The project’s solution is based on visible-light communications principles, processing data provided by other positioning modules with neural networks and local outlier factors, and coding trusted positioning information as hyperspectral images.

The building sector is the single largest energy consumer in Europe. Within its 2030 climate and energy framework, the EU has committed to improving the energy performance of buildings. Since three quarters of today’s buildings will still exist in 2050, the key to a low carbon building stock is to renovate. The EU-funded re-MODULEES project will develop an EU-wide umbrella platform for the renovation of existing EU residential buildings. re-MODULEES is based on EU-wide umbrella framework clustering efforts and aims at shaping cross-regional market activation policies. As such, the project will strategically leverage other EU-funded projects' knowledge and solutions to customise their market uptake according to regional climatic, building and socio-economic conditions. re-MODULEES aims at the creation of an EU-wide “umbrella” framework for EE in existing residential buildings based on the generation of standard modules for the retrofit market activation and up-take. Modularity is to be intended as multi-level: it regards the “breakdown” of the overall retrofit process into standardized segments; and multi-target: it regards their customization according to regional climatic, building, socio-economic and market conditions, in order to shape more effective tools and approaches through which to maximise cost-optimality, positive spillovers and impact. This framework is based on clustering of efforts and evidences, and would allow shaping cross-regional policies, and generating wider homogeneous, integrated and facilitated retrofitting market areas. For this reason, re-MODULEES aims to be a strategic capitalization project which, by leveraging on the wide background of several H2020 projects (as well as from other EU programs), will join and combine knowledge, approaches and tools already available within its clear modular framework, so to optimize their uptake on local markets.

The INSIGNIA project developed a context-aware Hybrid Positioning System capable of seamlessly providing indoor and outdoor location by integrating multiple positioning technologies. It focused particularly on improving indoor positioning methods such as Wi-Fi fingerprinting, BLE beacons, magnetic field positioning, and Pedestrian Dead Reckoning. In addition, the project delivered a customizable, privacy-aware positioning API designed to facilitate offline-capable integration into third-party commercial applications, addressing the challenges posed by the lack of standardization in data fusion across heterogeneous positioning sources.

he project "A network for dynamic WEarable Applications with pRivacy constraints" (A-WEAR) is a four year (2019-2022) H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie (MSCA) Innovative Training Network (ITN)/European Joint Doctorate (EJD) for bringing together 5 academic beneficiaries and 12 partner organizations from Finland, Czech Republic, Italy, Romania, and Spain, with the aim of educating, supervising, and training 15 young ambitious and creative researchers to face the future challenges in smart wearables and wireless computing and enhance their career prospects by training them in a multi-sector cross-country environment and teaching them to think globally. The emerging market of wearables is expected to grow exponentially in the near future, driven by the sales increase of smart clothes, watches, and eyeglasses. The future wearables are likely to be heterogeneous, operating on batteries, sun power or human motion, and endowed with smart functions. They will co-operate in a decentralized manner with each other and will be able to reach various interconnected software and applications. The main stream wearable-based architecture has been applied so far in wellbeing industries, such as eHealth or ambient assisted living, which might also reduce the costs for care and guarantee a healthy independent live in the forthcoming older society. As the digitalisation and data-based economy are growing, the exploitation potential of the wearables can easily be expected to increase. Key wearables stakeholder groups in the future are also smart cities, comprising intelligent building industry and infrastructure, energy-efficient smart grid sector, public e-Services, and smart transport. Motivated by the opportunities that next-generation wearable intelligence is expected to provide, the mission of A-WEAR action is to cross-disciplinarily create new architectures, open-source software and frameworks for dynamic wearable ecosystems, with distributed localization and privacy constraints. We aim at building new joint/double European doctoral programmes to train a new generation of young researchers in order to be aware of, to cope with, and to disseminate to a large audience the vulnerabilities and the corresponding solutions of the communication and positioning through wearables. The impact of A-WEAR will be to enhance the future social well-being, to contribute to an easy living, effective and enjoyable work, and to offer new solutions to the challenges of violation of privacy by communication and positioning through wearables and to the need of applying the right of the ownership to one’s data.
